Baseline direction

The baseline is an imaginary guide supporting the bodies of letters.

Handwriting and graphology

Locate the start and end of a line in reading order. Exclude strokes that descend below the letter bodies when estimating the baseline.

A line on an envelope may curve around a stain or near the edge. Record its position as well as its direction. An ascending line is not a measure of mood.
