Imaging and preservation
A file system may show local creation and modification times. An image may separately contain fields for capture time, camera model or editing software. Copying or exporting a file, or a device clock set incorrectly, can explain discrepancies. Such fields can also be edited or removed.
Suppose the computer lists today’s date while the photograph’s capture field dates from last year. The older image may simply have been copied to this computer today. Record the exact field and time zone if known, and check the transfer history before interpreting the discrepancy.
